Herman "Beige" Ball

M, d. 12 January 1999
Coach Herman Ball
Deceased
January 12, 1999
Herman "Beige" Ball married Edna Isora Leona Staniforth, daughter of Rev. Albert Staniforth and Alice Ellen Williams, circa 1937. He died on 12 January 1999 at Paoli, Penna; Herman ``Coach'' Ball, 88, of King of Prussia, who became an assistant coach with the Eagles in 1964 and personnel director in 1969, died of congestive heart failure Tuesday at Paoli Memorial Hospital.

During a career in the National Football League that spanned more than four decades, Mr. Ball was a scout, coach and administrator. He was head coach of the Washington Redskins from 1949 through part of the 1951 season.

Upon Mr. Ball's retirement from the Eagles as director of player personnel, coach Dick Vermeil called him ``one of the distinguished gentlemen in the NFL.''

He was intrigued by the tactical aspect of the game, said his son, Robert W. Ball.

``He loved the mental challenge, the strategy of it,'' said his son. ``He was extremely happy being a football coach. He spent his life doing what he loved.''

Mr. Ball, born in Elkins, W. Va., was a graduate of Elkins High School. He played football while a student at Davis and Elkins College but suffered a knee injury that dashed his own aspirations of playing professionally, his son said.

After graduating from college in 1934, Mr. Ball became a high school coach in Ridgley, W. Va., and Cumberland, Md., and then assistant coach at the University of Maryland in 1943.

He began scouting for the Redskins at the same time, joining the staff full time in 1947 as an assistant coach.

Mr. Ball was on the staff of the Redskins for eight years, moving from line coach to head coach midway through the 1949 season. He was replaced as head coach in the 1951 season.

He also was on the coaching staffs of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Colts. He was hired by the Eagles in 1964, coaching here until 1968. He became personnel director in 1969 and later was a personnel consultant before fully retiring in 1986.

In addition to his son, Mr. Ball is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edna Staniforth Ball.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Bacchi Funeral Home, 805 DeKalb St., Bridgeport. Friends may call there from noon to 12:50 p.m. Burial will be in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia.
